My thought for the day is that we who inhabit the planet earth and in this relatively “civilized” country, where women can vote, drive cars, say and do virtually anything we want to and anyone who can obtain a certain level of cash can buy a mamouth flat screen tv and cell phone can be rendered virtually powerless in a few short hours by good old Mother Nature. While it seems that in spite of a couple of recent and similar enactments, the power companies can not develop an effective crisis plan, gasoline supplies come to a standstill in no time, our reliance on television and the internet is now at neccessity status, and keeping one of those old phone books now seems like a very good idea, we are basically paralyzed by a few singular items such as trees, wind and environmental energy. Chalk one up for MN – she’s the victor, at least in the short run, as we scramble to get to the store for water, some sort of sustanance and crave any bit of normalcy. A daily shower, a hot cup of coffee with cold milk and heat on a cold morning are luxuries today – in New Jersey. We may kid ourselves to think we have mastered the planet, but, in fact, no way, not even close. This fact, is, in fact, great food for thought, wonder and ponderance of the relative powerlessness of our “domesticated” status.
Well, today is Sunday and it has now been 6 days since I last posted on this blog. I am now on my husband’s laptop and using an aircard to connect to the internet. I can not figure out why I cannot use my ipad or phone to get online – I am guessing it has something to do with AT&T’s connectivity issues.
On Monday I was blah, blah blahhing about how I love to go out in storms. I now feel that was a little prickly of me. According to the authorities, this could take as much as another 5 days. As the hours tick by, I am constantly reminded of how lucky I am that I have a generator which is currently providing us with heat and some electricity. However, I have to confess that my innate and not so patient personality returns me now and again and to some nagging thoughts, such as – isn’t this such a huge opportunity for someone to streamline and take us to the next generation of communications and power access? I admit I have little understanding of what it would actually take to do such a thing. So, frustrations aside and thankfulness of our safety and luck, I force myself to move on to other thoughts.
I am one who tends to believe there is a silver lining in most adverse circumstances and so, as these hours move along I am constantly reminded of how there is massive suffering in so many corners of this globe and that people have subsisted with nothing for centuries, and so, we can deal. My heart goes out to all who are cold and hungry and who have lost their home and in some cases loved ones. Peace to all and let us hope for the best.
