fair skies predicted: North Beach Orleans Ma as seen from Mill Pond
“…..still, to be enthralled with the simplest gifts of nature, how grateful I am”
All Hail! Spring is here – time to celebrate – and here on the east coast, wait for all the gorgeous fruits of the growing season. Yesterday, I got a little head start with some very nice strawberries and some peaches I had in the freezer:
the strawberry and the peach – words of happiness

vernal
adjective ver·nal \ˈvər-nəl\
: of, relating to, or occurring in the spring
Full Definition of VERNAL
1
: of, relating to, or occurring in the spring <vernal equinox> <vernal sunshine>
2
: fresh or new like the spring; also : youthful
Today is the first day of Spring, technically speaking. I say that because you know, it is supposed to snow today – 3-6″ here. And, although I can feel the weather before I see the weather, I am elated at today’s arrival. I will not be deterred. Today, I live in my happiness room. Today I can say, as I have been doing on the warmer of the last several days, “whew! I made it through another Winter, thank goodness!”
Spring it is and will be, because the earth has turned itself so, as to face and begin to receive longer days of sunlight. As we all know, this is no guarantee of nice or good weather. But, along with the package, we usually do get some – along with those lovely longer days of the season of growing, of renewal of, well, um new life. I for one, will trek heartily and happily toward those longest days of sunlight of the year – those mornings when the sunlight will wake me on the e-n-e shore of Cape Cod around 5 am, and last until 9pm.
prepare – I am about to get carried away:
sorry, I really got ahead of myself there.
Those mornings are particularly cherished, because they can be among the most crisp and brilliant and I take my coffee and beach towel, to place upon my chair to absorb the overnight damp, and sit there, some days for hours and just absorb the air and wait for the sun to lift itself over the tree line and warm my skin. It couldn’t be lovelier.
The word, vernal, means “of spring”. It’s not my favorite sounding word, but it’s meaning is good enough for me. Today, I am still awaiting signs of the season to come in our yard here in NJ. I have a hyacinth whose little noses remain frozen in place, on the north side of the house. The sun has warmed enough over the past week or so as to chase away much of the snow that fell here in February. Today’s forecast will come and go – tomorrow, it should be 49F. And so, we prepare for the “fun part”.
Lest you look out your window and not see any colors, here are some images from my “files” that will give you a little flavor of what’s to come:
I can hardly contain myself! Have a Happy Day! All good things shall come, and soon!
