in loving memory of my wonderful Mom who would have been 93 today
I’m a little disturbed about the pace of things in the garden this year. The peony season lasted all of about 2 weeks and is but a memory now, roses were right on top of them, and now I have large numbers of Endless Summer Blossoms coming along like crazy. Not that I’m complaining about that, but jeez, slow down a little. Becky Daisies and Phlox are pushing right along. Today is June 22nd – the second day of Summer. Is the earth rotating on a slightly advanced axis this year? It sure would seem so.
I’ve already done a hard prune on my roses, having become a viscous dead-header early in the mornings. I am bound and determined to get another bloom going here – things are looking sad and I found 2 Japanese Beetles this morning! UGH
Honestly, it’s kind of disconcerting to be at this point already. The long, lingering waltz I prefer to have with this time of year seems to be in a mad dash, chomping at the bit to race ahead. It makes me wonder what August is going to look like. While I’m not anxious for weeks and weeks of steamy-hot weather, it makes me wonder if Summer is going to pass in a quick flash.
Is the garden turing out to be like the pace of life in general? Hurried, hard-charging, anxious to get it over with? I wonder what this all means.
These flowers don’t usually really get going until well into July. I have a full push of daylillies already and the asiatic lilies have been blooming for a couple of weeks now. I’ve had a full crop of strawberries come and go and the lettuces are gone.
Let’s take it a little bit more slowly, can’t we? I had a massive buck right outside my back door last Thursday morning – didn’t get to the camera fast enough. I don’t think I have seen as large a deer as that, maybe ever. He just stood there and looked at Kit and me in a major statement of defiance. The buds of his rack were well-formed and emerging at a good pace as well. He was indeed a beautiful animal, in spite of the fact that he was grazing way too close to the house for my liking.
I wonder if he is ahead of schedule, too.
Tonight in the kitchen, I’m back to the Zucchini and the Julienne Peeler. I’m planning on serving seared sea scallops over the Zucchini Pasta. see my post: https://kitchen-inspirational.com/2015/06/17/in-love-with-the-julienne-peeler-loaves-and-fishes-cook-shop-and-the-zucchini-pasta/
didn’t get a great sear on these, used sliced almonds instead of pignolis – served with puréed cauliflower with thyme, nutmeg, roasted garlic a little heavy cream and parmesan 🙂
Cheers to Summer! If the veggies come as fast and furious as the flowers, well, we had better get ready!
