I confess to never having been to Hammonton, New Jersey, home of blueberry heaven. It's a "must-do" on my list, for purposes of celebrating all the great farming that goes on in my native state. Depending on your source, NJ ranks #4 or 5 in national production of blueberries. This is pretty impressive in my book. Today, I got going early on reminiscing with music - first it was Cat Stevens' Morning Has Broken, in my earlier post and now … [Read more...]
Guilty of Self-Deception – Gift of Light and Shadow
Yes, I'm guilty. I admit it. I am guilty of self-dissuasion, delusion and deception. (We had a "discussion" this morning on the patio about whether or not you could put a "self" in front of any word you so desired, even if it wasn't commonly used.) I use the presentations in my yard and elsewhere to deliberately deceive myself, if only for a moment, that life in the world is beautiful, serene and affirming and to snap-shut the pictures of all … [Read more...]
Gluten-Free Blueberry Corn Muffins Worth Eating
Yesterday, I had a great day, indulging in the best Heirloom Tomato and Basil Sandwich ever. Today, I'm a little sadder because eating bread, albeit organic multi-grain, just doesn't agree with me much any more. tastes like Summer Heaven! the basil makes it! Today, I wanted to try to make a favorite of mine, Corn Muffins. And, it's the heart of Blueberry Season here in NJ! I wanted to try to see if I could satiate my craving, have a … [Read more...]
Fruitwise and Fancy-Free; Seize the Day! – Mixed Berry and Plum Pie
at their peak Peak, Peek and Pique: I'm off to Union Square today in spite of the weather. I go to peek, to get fruits and vegetables at their peak and to pique my interest! It is important to seize the day when it comes to maximizing the use of the best fruit at the market or at your farm stand. I love to watch the rolling forward of the produce season - and do tend to hoard things when they are at their peak. But, I have to confess … [Read more...]
Sausages, Roasted Grapes and Plums on the Grill – Cooking with A-Plum
I find the colors of plums to be irresistible You know I have this little thing about words, music, movies and puns. Today it's A-Plum vs aplomb - as in let's use a plum with aplomb to try to create an enhanced dish…..ok, so I acknowledge that my mind works in mysterious ways…….. Plums offer many great opportunities at this time of year. In the bbq department you can use them in sauces, compotes, salsas and dishes such as the one … [Read more...]
Buyer Beware – Considering the Real Cost of Saving Money on Food; and why Making Your Own Ice Cream Sandwiches is a Great Idea
image courtesy Brown Eyed Baker This morning I awoke to a reporter talking about a Walmart Ice Cream Sandwich that didn't melt at 80F. This helped me to become more alert at about 5:30 and, considering I had just heard another report a few days ago about hot dog rolls which didn't become moldy - almost ever, and therefore must be somewhere on the spectrum of inert foodstuffs, I immediately got to thinking about what big food "manufacturers" … [Read more...]
Hal Scaff, a Man for All Seasons – Garden State of Affairs
Garden State Rural Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder, Circa 2014 Last year on July 13, I wrote a post, noted below, which focused on the amazing beauty that lives in the Garden State - and right around the corner from where I live. For many people who live in rural areas of the country, the sighting of cows grazing happily is not an uncommon occurrence. But, here in northern New Jersey it is. I guess I may have been feeling a little … [Read more...]
À pied à Paris en Juillet – la partie finale
I was fascinated by the juxtaposition of the shimmering water, the reflections and what rose away from them Well, it seems as though I should try to finish up my chronicling on my Paris trip in this post. I can't go on forever, can I? I don't really want to separate from the memories quite yet. Aside from going to Musee L'Orangerie, we didn't do museums this trip. We wanted to focus our time out of doors. But, I made an exception to … [Read more...]
À pied à Paris en Juillet – la troisième partie
The Lavender Gardens Sunday was the day we decided to visit the Luxembourg area and I, of course, had to go to the Farmer's Market. But first we strolled along La Rue de Rivoli and through and around the entrance to Le Louvre in order to cross the River at a different spot. As we strolled: a favorite site - more on this later where one's job is to stack butter cookies into perfect pyramids all day long - <3 a … [Read more...]
À pied à Paris en Juillet – la deuxième partie
in search of - European sensibility To say that I must be a European at heart is no understatement. (you've heard this before) Every time I touch down, I feel like I have gone home. I adore how Europeans cling to their way of life - while Americans seem to have some insatiable need to explode everything - to expand, duplicate x millions, - all the while diluting and degrading the experience they, at least in some cases, initially sought … [Read more...]
